A web publisher in Austin, Texas, Zilker Ventures is one of the many young, energetic companies that make up the growing tech landscape of Austin. I visited their office on South Congress this week to do corporate headshots for the entire staff. Typically, headshot photography is done in a studio with several lights and a big canvas backdrop. Some photographers lug the same equipment to on-location photo shoots like this one, but I use a different system. A lightweight combination of IR-controlled shoe-mount flashes, reflectors, collapsible softboxes and flip-out backdrops allow me to set up quicker, shoot faster and more effectively, and be more flexible and creative with my photography.
Using a multiexposure light-painting technique for their interior group photo, I left the camera on the tripod, attached a remote shutter release and walked around the room with a 3×3 softbox – illuminating the various groups I arranged. Later, I combined exposures in PhotoShop and created a cohesive composite – the result being the main image on this page.
